Gastineau Massamba Mbongo, sculptor, painter and poet, was born in 1973 in Poto-Poto and currently lives and works between Paris and Brazzaville. He learnt the basics of art with his father, professor of sculpture and ceramics at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Brazzaville. His father thought his son would become a journalist or a law yer, but he chose art and began painting in 1995. He then left his father’s workshop to study at the Centre d’Art de la Tsiémé in Talangaı, directed by Remy Mongo Etsion, who will become his teacher and influence him with his views. Mystical and concrete, abstract and figurative at the same time, he paints popes and high priestesses, the Sape, the holocaust and the obsession of war. He has had many exhibitions both in the Congo and abroad, including Belgium, France, Spain, the USA, Brazil, Senegal, Gabon and Morocco.
