Photos from the 70’s made by Deo Kyakulagira
The Photographer (I)
In conversation with the life and work of Deo Kyakulagira
Deo Kyakulagira (1940-2000) was very passionate about photography. He operated several photo studios, most importantly the Central Art Studio Limited in Kampala, which he ran from the early 1970s until his untimely death in 2000. Mr. Kyakulagira worked as a photographer for the Ministry of Agriculture and the Department of Medical Illustration at Mulago Hospital. History In Progress Uganda founder Andrea Stultiens digitized his photographic legacy and, in collaboration with his family, initiated a conversation in photographs. On the occasion of the exhibition a publication about this work will be presented.
The upcoming exhibition of Deo Kyakulagira’s photographic work is the third collaboration between Makerere Art Gallery/IHCR and Andrea Stultiens with History In Progress Uganda. The cooperation started with the exhibition and book presentation of the Kaddu Wasswa Archive in May 2011, followed by the exhibition Sketching a Civilization with Rumanzi Canon in April 2013. Exhibition and book presentation of The Photographer; Deo Kyakulagira is the first in a new annual exhibition series in collaboration with HIPUganda that will present books and photographs highlighting work and life of Ugandan photographers. The following projects in HIPUganda’s Ebifananyi series will feature the work of Musa Katuramu (1913-1986), and Elly Rwakoma (1937- ).
