About:

StevenSikkens32014.

“As a self-taught artist and doctor – Antillean, born in 1973 – I make an effort for a universal synthesis of (ab)normal activities and everyday dilemmas in a continuous creative process.
Living and working in Amsterdam as Afro-Caribbean Dutchman, I have a cosmic identity. With my work, I like to keep the inner world in balance and integrate apparent contradictions against the background of our everyday reality.

A broad social orientation and fascination for interpersonal relationships create an source of inspiration that never runs dry.
With my very own interpretation of contemporary themes, my love for reciprocity and paradoxes is expressed.

My works are characterized by a strong sense of urgency, eloquence and emotional complexity. They arise by their own initiative, in an associative and reflective manner. They have a preference for strong contrasts in their composition. Some are downright criminal and should never have painted. Others feel themselves being unappreciated or do not know for sure if they are really finished…”

In his drawings he creates fantastic worlds in which a lot seem to happen, in which elements are brought together that look familiar, but, combined make an original narrative. His use of black and white makes these non colors into colors.
Street art, pop art and surrealism are important sources. Dutch culture and Caribbean culture find each other.
