About:
Untitled (for Africa…for Europe), 2014.
Kekeli Sumah (1990) is an audio/visual artist currently living and working in Chicago, where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art and Visual Critical Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Born in Accra, Ghana he moved to Vienna, Austria to complete his secondary education. Kekeli Sumah’s cross-disciplinary works explore the cultural politics of globalization and the construction of identity, particularly the tangled interrelationship between Europe and Africa. By mingling Western art historical traditions with what is often distanced as ‘Other,’ Sumah uses the lens of post-colonialism and hybridity to question the constituent characteristics of our contemporary identity. As a result of introducing potent ready-mades such as chocolate and paper airplanes into the space of the art-event, Sumah playfully reconfigures the history we project unto the objects, showing the inherent fragmentary nature of the component parts.
