Myriam Mihindou, who is of Gabonese ancestry, was born in Libreville in 1964, and has lived in France for the last ten years. She does extremely profound work which interrogates the status of the image and the question of the being, between forces of tradition and the contemporary world. In her work the body is the vector of all sorts of feelings from the living memory of a culture that is based on codes, taboos, beliefs and other rituals. This exhibition is also the first to be held at the Chapelle de la Visitation, which is almost entirely devoted to photography. As it is closely related to the idea of painting and/or sculpture, Mihindou’s work corresponds to a production that a contemporary art critic would willingly qualify as being that of an “artist.
About: Projet L’anneau bleu
Au cours de mes voyages en Afrique noire et dans l’espace méditerranéen, j’ai rencontré de nombreuses personnes portant un anneau bleu autour de l’iris. Certaines l’ignorent, d’autres se pensent malades, des récits circulent à ce sujet, tandis que l’ophtalmologie identifie des signes de gérontoxon (arc sénile de la cornée) ou de cataracte.
Ce projet nomade, en work in process, est un ensemble géo-poétique de photographies, de vidéos, de performances, d’enquêtes, de recueil de paroles. Il fait appel à des compétences pluridisciplinaires : ophtalmologie, génétique, géographie, histoire, histoire de l’art, géo-politique, philosophie… L’œil assure la transition entre l’intime et le collectif (« Où mettre la limite du corps et du monde, puisque le monde est chair ? », demandait Merleau-Ponty dans Le Visible et l’invisible). Si le monde est chair, toute pensée est un récit et ce sont à ces récits que ce projet s’attache.
