One sits, as one thinks he sits
Sitting, it may look like a simple and even universal act. Still there is this enormous rich variety of sit forms in the world; culture, social distinction, and role patterns for people of both sexes: all matters that are of influence on the individuals’ way of sitting. This diversity is the starting point for the project ‘ Sitting in art’.
Mainly sit forms in various socials groups and cultures that depicted in the objects of Delano Paul Mac Andrew. Not just the sit form is of importance; also the context that enforces –sometimes imposes – the way of sitting: for instance rules and rituals, which are ‘inseparable’, bound up with the concerning sit form. These are the stories behind his sculptures.
In his objects Delano Paul Mac Andrew deals with the interface between the chair as a utensil and a visual object, between the applied and autonomous art. This is because the essence of sitting for us in the West often means ‘ taking place on a chair or seat’.
Therefore Delano chose the “chair form as his base.
In some African, Asian and South American regions on other hand, one often sits on the floor or on the ground, without the support of a chair. Mainly the unsupported sitting positions from certain African and Asian cultures are an inspiring guide to him.
Because the body rests on the ground, the legs become a much more eye-catching factor. The legs provide interesting lines. This feast of forms and the social context that is associated with each posture, are important principles for his work. Playing with the abstraction is more important to Delano than making object on which on can actually sit on.
