Dereje is a full time artists at Nubia Visual Art Studio; a studio he co-owns since 2003 with his wife and fellow artist Merikokeb.

Dereje studied at the Addis Ababa University Alle School of Fine Arts and Design specializing in mural art, graduating in 2002 – he went back to Alle to specialize in painting, graduating in 2012.
Dereje’s signature mural art designs can be found in many establishments around Addis Ababa – notably within the Boston and Partners building. He also worked as a painting instructor at Mat Fine Art Academy in Addis Ababa. Dereje illustrated numerous UNICEF posters between the years 2002 and 2005. In 2006, he designed the Nile Development Forum poster under the theme ”The Role of the Nile in Poverty Reduction and Economic Development in the Basin”. In 2008, his 100 meter street painting displayed in Meskel Squar in Addis Ababa – ‘Stop early marriage’ – commemorated the International Women’s day. Dereje won the first prize for the United Nations Population Fund International Poster Contest of ‘Population and the Environment’ in 1992.
