About:

Gideon Appah is a Ghanaian Urban artist whose work is reminiscent of artists such as Basquiat and Oscar Murillo. Using a myriad of mediums including text, images, found objects and collage, Appah expresses his fascination and concern regarding contemporary media and popular culture.

With the generous support from both Goethe Accra and the Nubuke Foundation, Gideon Appah has recently emerged as the winner of the First Merit Award by Barclays L’Atelier 2015 (the first foreign artist to qualify in the competitions history), and has participated in several exhibitions in Ghana since obtaining his Bachelor of Arts Degree at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in 2012.

Statement:

When asked about the future of art in Africa, he responded: “It’s growing. Ten years ago, no one cared, but there has been massive growth. International galleries have started collecting exceptional African art. Our generation is blessed to have these opportunities open to us. We’re getting noticed more and more.”
