Jody Paulsen (1987, Cape Town) graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2009. He obtained a Masters degree from the same institution in 2013. Paulsen was awarded the Katherine Harries Print Cabinet Award in 2009 and the Jules Kramer Departmental Scholarship Award in 2012. He has shown in numerous group exhibitions across the country, including The Night Show at the Goodman Gallery Cape Town in 2011, and the prestigious Sasol New Signatures Award at the Pretoria Art Museum in 2010. Pursuing his interest in fashion, Paulsen collaborated with Adriaan Kuiters for the Spring/Summer 2014 collection as part of the Mercedes-Benz Cape Town Fashion Week.

Each collage tells a story. Paulsen typically starts with one or two phrases at the top of the poster, a title that serves almost as a statement of intent for the piece. He then painstakingly fleshes out the narrative by adding all of the additional elements below it. Metropolitan City Man was loosely inspired by the debonair but ultimately doomed Madoff-esque tycoon portrayed by Alec Baldwin in Blue Jasmine. Perhaps that’s why it’s unclear whether those gaping mouths are smiling or grimacing in pain.

Gay culture and history are an important source of inspiration and fascination for Paulsen, and with this in mind, a trip to San Francisco is planned in the near future. Paulsen seems acutely aware of the ephemeral nature of youth and is determined to enjoy its freedoms while he can. Traveling alone and experiencing everything a city has to offer is something he is determined to do more of.

When asked about his influences, Paulsen name-checks Tracey Emin, Yayoi Kusama, and Sarah Lucas. He also admires the work of fellow Capetonians Georgina Gratrix, Nico Krijno, and Julia Rosa Clark. But he claims the greatest influence on his work comes from the world of fashion
