About:

MoCADA is pleased to present Selections from Revelations, a photography series by Zimbabwean artist Kudzanai Chiurai from 2011. Chiurai chronicles the rise of a fictitious African leader through a satirical lens, and constructs environments that feed the Western imagination about the state of the contemporary African continental politics.

The scenes are densely layered with signifiers of post-colonial upheaval: oil containers, emptied liquor bottles, corporate branding; conspirators to the candidate’s corrupt campaign and bloodied casualties crowd each frame. Chiurai’s chaotic compositions result in flattened picture planes which distort the viewer’s depth perception, a visual effect that mirrors the monolithic and reductive representations of the continent as perpetuated in global mainstream news media.
