Leila Alaoui: No Pasara
About:
“No Pasara”, the first project by Alaoui (1982-2016), a photographer and video artist whose work is based on observing the world, speaks to her humanitarian engagement. This series of twenty-four images commissioned by the European Union in 2008 presents young Moroccans imagining an Eldorado on the other side of the Mediterranean, and captures the essence of desperate youth. Alaoui was a French-Moroccan artist who died of her injuries following an Al-Qaida attack in Ougaudougou, Burkina Faso, on January 15, 2016, where she was on assignment, reporting on women’s rights.
The exhibition was organized by the MMFA, in collaboration with the Fondation Leila Alaoui, Marrakesh, Morocco; Galleria Continua, San Gimignano, Italy, Beijing, China, Les Moulins, France, and Havana, Cuba; as well as VOICE Gallery, Marrakesh, Morocco. Thanks to Youssef Fichtali for his contribution to the production of the exhibition.
