Nu Baretto
About:
Nù Barreto is a visual artist originated from Guinea Bissau. This man of arts and passion discovered his vocation from his elder brother who taught him how to draw at an early age. « Comic strip was both my first love and my companion in solitude, a moment of connection between arts and I », he says. He moved to France at 22 and studied at the Paris based School of the Image, in Gobelins. His uncle persuaded him to change his orientation as visual arts are not something easy to handle. Despite the conflicting relationship he had with his uncle, the young Guinean persevered and managed to finish his studies.

After a tough start in photography, Nù Barreto naturally turned to painting. « Photography sounded quite static and limited because it does not bring the possibility to add elements that allow you to have a clear and easy reading of the artwork (…) By contrast, painting and drawing can offer you the opportunity to act at your convenience ». The invitation to an exhibition from a friend of his will be the starting point of his artistic career. Known for his work of an engaged artist, Nù denounces social issues in most of his paintings. Today, his artwork is exhibited all over the world : France, Portugal, Spain, Brazil… Nominated to represent Guinea Bissau at Lumières d’Afriques Exhibition, Afrique sur scène wanted to know some more about the artist. www.nubarreto.com (text Afrique sur scène site)
