About:
Paul Ndema uses satire to put his message across.
Born in Bushenyi district in western Uganda in 1979, Paul studied Industrial and Fine Arts at the Margaret Trowell School of Industrial and Fine Arts, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda.
While at the university from 1999 to 2002, he studied sculpture, graphic design and majored in oil painting. Paul has been a full time artist in Uganda since he left university. His favourite subjects are Christianity and the hypocrisy of its followers, focusing on the relationship between Ugandan law enforcers, in particular the Police, and the civilians holding protests on the streets.
No African pope, 2015.
The Seal of Confession, 2016.
Be Like the Raven, 2016.
He candidly exposes the hypocrisies that exist both within the political administration and also Catholicism, as he has experienced it. He addresses issues around sexual identity and perceived sexual deviance. He uses vivid geometric patterns as a background contrasted with a unique foreground aesthetic used to portray the transgressors and victims of questionable, and often unnecessary, laws. Ndema holds a mirror to society exposing its rampant duplicities.(quote of Zihan Kassam on Conceptual Fine Arts site, May 2016).
