About:
Sikhumbuzo Makandula is a visual artist born in De Aar, and currently lives and works between Johannesburg and Grahamstown. He is studying at Rhodes University and specializes in photography, video and performance art. ‘My work attempts to address the issue of ritual, spacing and the faith I grew up on- a faith that is both ritual and spiritual- and to investigate how it continues to mediate the complex processes involved in defining and refiguring my own cultural, religious, political and social identity as a black South African.

Through use of counter sites where real spaces of the society are simultaneously represented, contested and inverted, my work focuses on the issue of ritual and the role it played, and continues to play, in colonial as well as post-colonial in African society.’ -Sikhumbuzo Makandula As the 2011 Sasol New Signatures runner-up winner, Makandula exhibited at the Pretoria art Museum, and was part of the group exhibition at Ecole Cantonale d’Art du Valais, Sierre, Switzerland in 2014. During National Arts Festival 2014 Makandula participated in Blind Spot site specific performances, as well as Analogue Eye Video Art of Africa. In 2013 he participated in a group exhibition at Nirox Projects, Arts on Main, Johannesburg, as well as First Floor Gallery Harare, Zimbabwe during Harare International Festival of Arts.
