Zohra Opoku

Zohra Opoku is an Accra based artist, hails from the fields of fashion and photography, she holds an MA (2003) in Fashion from the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences.

Opoku was introduced to the art world through the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, where she talked about her published magazine POKUAA. After her strong learning experiences with the Danish artist/fashion designer Henrik Vibskov(2006-07) she has been recognised by the ´V&A Museum London, featured in their show and publication “Black Style”(2007).
Her subjects of interest are the aesthetic statements in textile cultures related to African history, and movements between Africa and its diaspora. Through their trends and traditions, Opoku highlights the important role clothes play in shaping individual and societal identities.

Opoku is included in the touring group exhibitions Pret-a-partager(2008-12) and Making Africa (2015-20) in the Vitra Design Museum Switzerland travelling then to Guggenheim Bilbao. Her residencies include Art OMI, Ghent (NY/2012)/, Iwalewa Haus Bayreuth (DE/2013) and Jan van Eyck Institute Maastricht (NL/ 2014). She is invited to Bagfactory Johannesburg (SA/2015) and is recipient of the Kala Institute Fellowship award (CA/2015).(text Art Base Africa)
