Trails at Plymouth, 2016.

About:

Self-taught artist Danny Fox (1986) was born in St.Ives, Cornwall, a seaside town made famous by its numerous artist residents. Despite moving from the town many years ago, Danny’s cornish lineage remains visible in his work, most pertinently in the parallels between his oil paintings and the so-called “naive” work of 19th Century fishman-painter Alfred Wallis, who also lived for a time in St Ives. But where Wallis’ paintings are simplistic, executed in muted greys, creams and blues on tiny pieces of driftwood, Fox’s work is the opposite: huge, brightly-coloured canvasses which demand attention.

There has always been a colonial interest in my work but I’ve been thinking about it more and more since moving to LA. I can’t help but imagine what it must of been like for an Englishman arriving here a couple hundred years ago, or a Cornish miner coming over during the Gold Rush: it’s all relevant because it’s all so evident in today’s society.(quotes from It’s Nice That, Bryony Stone, Friday 26 August 2016)
