About:
Mrs Balogun is a photo project that tells the story of a married woman struggling with her independence and the possible loss of herself in the marriage.
It has been argued that in certain cultures within Nigeria it is common for women to be seen as accessories to a marriage as opposed to being acknowledged as one half of the marriage. This photo story explores that argument and captures the inner struggles of a married Nigerian woman in patriarchal society. Marriage as an institution is notorious in certain parts of Nigeria for crippling women with its societal expectations as opposed to empowering them, so much so that the never-ending pursuit of individuality becomes far-fetched.
