About:
Selected in 2010 as one of ten finalists in the ABSA Atelier Exhibition in Johannesburg Sibusiso Duma, born 1978, is a young artist making his mark on the South African art scene. As a young man Duma’s talent was nurtured by the late Trevor Makhoba, however Duma a self-professed story-teller, has developed his own unique style and visual language. He loves to paint in symbolism, humor, bold color and allusions, creating mystery and wonder through his unique visual language. Duma’s paintings are gentle, yet his subjects are bold and his treatment of surface, shape and color clean and uncomplicated. The clean lines of his work aid Duma in his humorous and satirized storytelling of the complex social issues of his time.

While the usage of his unique iconography and metaphors layer the paintings with symbolism and meaning. Through his paintings Duma shares the stories of his childhood, his social opinions and the beliefs of his culture. His pictorial stories enrich one deeply with a understanding of his life and the current social conditions and how the artist makes sense of it. Strikingly is the dominance of the human figure in a Duma, which are rich vehicles for portraying the stories of his life and his experiences. (text/courtesy Christopher Moller Gallery Cape Town)
